Integrated Medical Device Design.
2s.design and Somco Join Forces in the NPD Process.

Developing modern medical devices and advanced IoT/IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) products requires strict coordination of engineering efforts. When hardware and software are created in isolated departments, time-to-market increases, and the ergonomics of the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) suffer the most.

To solve this problem, 2s.design has formed a technology partnership with Somco Software. Instead of dividing the R&D process, we integrate mechanical and enclosure design with embedded software development. For our clients, this means a faster transition from early concept to prototype and retaining full control over their intellectual property (IP).

Eliminating Delays at the Intersection of Hardware and Software

The New Product Development (NPD) process is always a major logistical challenge. The traditional model requires the client to independently coordinate the work of a design agency and an external software house. This setup frequently generates errors and delays where these technologies meet.

Our partnership eliminates this problem at its source. 2s.design brings expertise in industrial design, mechanical engineering, and usability. Somco Software is a team of experts specializing in safety-critical software, medical systems, and the Qt framework. Combining these competencies allows us to offer a process where electronics design, mechanics, and code are developed in parallel as one cohesive whole.

Electronics Prototyping and IP Security

A critical moment in the R&D process is the transition from the conceptual phase to physical prototyping. Outsourcing the construction of early prototypes to the Far East slows down the implementation of hardware revisions due to shipping times alone and communication across different time zones. Furthermore, operating in a different jurisdiction requires much greater caution when managing intellectual property (IP).

We propose a different path, based on a proven, local technology ecosystem in Poland. Integrating engineering competencies in one place alongside local production entirely changes the workflow dynamics:

  • Rapid knowledge sharing: When we optimize the enclosure architecture for better heat dissipation, software engineers immediately know how this will affect the system’s performance limits.
  • Local supply chain: We collaborate closely with Polish manufacturers of displays and PCBs, drastically cutting down the waiting time for components.

The entire process takes place locally, within the European Union, ensuring the client’s proprietary technology remains fully protected.

Parallel Design of Mechanics and the Interface (GUI)

When designing an interface for medical devices, we don’t just create screen mockups to be programmed by a third party. Somco’s expertise in Qt technology and our knowledge of physical ergonomics mean that we factor in the architecture and limitations of the selected hardware from the very first sketches.

We match the layout of physical buttons, the type of display, and its viewing angles directly to the logic of the interface. We test how the physical enclosure interacts with the system’s response time. The result of this approach is fluid interaction and reliability, which is a fundamental requirement in the medical industry.

One R&D Team for Your Product Development

You do not need to look for separate providers for CAD design, mechanics, and embedded software. 2s.design and Somco combine the competencies necessary to smoothly guide your product through the main R&D phases: from initial concept validation, through component selection, to a fully functional prototype ready for engineering tests (pre-compliance) and the medical certification process.

If you are looking for a trusted partner to create a new medical device or IoT product, contact us. We would be happy to discuss how we can support your technical team in your upcoming project.
